Personal Life:
Clayton Goodwin was born in October 1942 in the small hamlet Stony Corner near Gravesend in Kent. After village primary school he was educated at Sir Joseph Williamson’s Mathematical School (1953-1960) in Rochester and at the School of Oriental and African Studies (1960-1964), University of London. Clayton came into journalism in June 1961 as a messenger (during college vacation) for Reg Hayter (Hayter’s Sports Reporting Agency), and while struggling to establish his career – before becoming a fulltime self-employed journalist on 1st June 1976 - he worked in various jobs including travel agency clerk, asbestos/bitumen welder, AA (Automobile Association) Emergency Service telephonist, civil servant, and market researcher in the building industry. Clayton has been married to Hopelyn (nee Mills), who was born in Jamaica, since June 1967. They have two children, Elaine and Robert, the first-named of whom is married to Paul Parsons and has three children. Clayton is a former secretary of the national Liberal Party Community Relations Panel (now the Liberal Democrats), and represented the party as candidate in Erith & Crayford for the GLC in 1977 and in Gravesend in the General Election (1979). He still lives in North-west Kent. Clayton had a play accepted by (Lord) Bernard Miles in 1968 for production at the Mermaid Thestre, but he could not get time off from his then employment to attend the necessary production meetings.
